HOW LONG DOES THE MEMBERSHIP YEAR LAST?
Annual membership runs from 1st January to 31st December. Those joining in September will receive membership benefit for the reminder of the year for free and the new year as well. That is, up to 16 month membership.
General Membership includes membership of the AFBA, one committee and one sub regional forum. Any additional committee in the LPD or SPPID or Sub regional fora (forum) can be purchase at $25 (Twenty five dollars). Membership shall be opened to any member of AFBA subject to satisfactory completion of application form.
WHAT BENEFITS DO I GET AS AN AFBA MEMBER?
African Bar Association (AFBA) Membership guarantees an opportunity to a vast online library of legal resources and contents and guarantees access to publications regularly via newsletters magazines and journals.
Members can claim discounts to AFBA conference and get discount from selected AFBA partner and the products.
Other benefits include
- subscription to the AFBA
- registered lawyers can be located on Google maps using our “Find a Lawyer Near You” feature
- lawyers registered in our database and having satisfactorily signed up can have their profiles and business information available for viewing, complete with a photograph
Discounts on insurance and banking facilities and other value-added services are being negotiated in various regions around Africa.
DO I GET A MEMBERSHIP CERTIFICATE?
No, we do not normally give membership certificate upon registration, but they can be purchased for an administrative fee of $15 (fifteen US Dollars). Membership number and card are given upon registration.
DOES AFBA MEMBERSHIP ENTITLE ME TO LAW PRACTICE WITHIN THE AFRICAN CONTINENT?
Being a member of the AFBA does not entitle you to practice law in any jurisdiction. The AFBA is a non regulatory body.
DO I GET A MEMBERSHIP CARD?
Upon registration membership cards will be made available within a month of processing your application and same may be forwarded to your address at a fee of $15 USD (Fifteen Dollars).
DO I NEED PROOF OF QUALIFICATION?
We would not normally ask for proof of qualification unless circumstances require same.
HOW DO I PAY?
You can pay online by credit or debit card, cheque, bank transfer or cash at AFBA events.
Our POS machines are also available for payment at designated areas and at our offices.
IS MEMBERSHIP RENEWABLE?
Yes. Renewal is required in January of each year for the duration of 12 (twelve) months.

CAN MEMBERS SIGN UP TO CONFERENCES ONLINE?
Yes, new members will be sent login details by email. When you receive them you will be able to go to “My AFBA” area of the website where you can sign up to conference purchase, AFBA products, pay or check the status of your payment.
Members who are unable to make online payment will not be able register for conference online and will be required to complete a hard copy registration form.
DO I GET A DISCOUNT IF I REGISTER MORE THAN ONE LAWYER FROM THE SAME FIRM?
If a significant number of lawyers from your firm wish to become members of the AFBA, your firm may want to consider joining as a Group Member firm. For further details please see www.afribar.org/group-membership.

BY CHOOSING A FREE REGIONAL FORUM AS A PART OF MY MEMBERSHIP, AM I ENTITLED TO ATTEND ONE OF THE REGIONAL CONFERENCES FOR FREE?
No, your membership does not entitle you to attend any regional conference for free.
The word ‘Forum” can often be misinterpreted to mean a conference. When the word “forum” is used by the AFBA Forum is a committee set up to represent the interest of members practicing on or with links to a particular sub region or group.
ARE ANY CONFERENCE INCLUDED IN THE MEMBERSHIP PRICE?
No, you are not invited to any free conferences as a part of your membership package. But as a member you can receive a significant discount on AFBA conference fees. ( Subject to conclusions)
HOW DO I CHANGE MY PERSONAL DETAILS?
“My AFBA online” offers you an easy way to update your personal details online. Alternatively you can email and inform us of your new contact details at firstname.lastname@example.org.
HOW DO I FIND OUT MY AFBA MEMBERSHIP NUMBER?
Your membership number will be sent to you in a welcome email. It will also be displayed on your membership card. You may contact AFBA for your membership details.
CAN I PAY A DISCOUNTED RATE FOR MY MEMBERSHIP?
The fee payable are subsidized, however discounted rates are available for full time academic judges, government lawyers, retired lawyers and lawyers from low income countries.
